SEVERN CULLIS-SUZUKI
Environmental Activist

Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been active in environmental and social justice work since kindergarten. At age 9, after witnessing burning in the Brazilian Amazon on a trip with her family, she started the Environmental Children’s Organization with her grade 5 friends. ECO was committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. Eventually they were successful in raising enough money to appear at 1992’s Rio Earth Summit, when 12-year-old Severn delivered a powerful speech at a plenary session that gained worldwide attention. For this, she received the UN Environment Program’s Global 500 Award in 1993. Since then, Severn has spoken worldwide on social and ecological issues, on climate change, and intergenerational injustice.

Severn is proud of her work on the UN’s Earth Charter Commission, and participation on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Special Advisory Panel for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. At this Summit Severn brought a pledge called the Recognition of Responsibility, a declaration from students in Canada and the US. The trip also was the subject of a documentary film that aired on CBC’s long-running documentary series The Nature of Things.

Severn uses many ways to get her message out. She hosted a children’s TV series called Suzuki’s Naturequest, and co-edited the book Notes from Canada’s Young Activists. She currently sits on BC’s Citizen’s Conservation Council on Climate Change, and the board of the David Suzuki Foundation. She has a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale University, and recently, a Masters in Ethnobotany from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, studying with Kwakwaka’wakw elders on the West coast. She hopes her pursuit of traditional and scientific knowledge will help her mandate of promoting a culture of diversity, sustainability and joy.

Severn now lives on the islands of Haida Gwaii.

my mountain home were we live close to the earth our home rocks and sways our home high in the Scottish mountains our home…

Another Change the world challenge from our friend small

Let's just jump right into this week's challenge, shall we? Here we go:

Two of our bloggy friends, Amy Byrd of The Wayland Springs Cook and Marcy of Cooking Rut (both wonderful chefs), suggested this:

This week, for the entire week, refuse to use paper towels. Yep, 7 days ... no paper towels.

Or ...

If you never use paper towels, please write a post about how you get by without them.

This sounds easy enough ... but I'm guessing that it's going to be a real challenge for some ... especially when many are in the habit of just reaching for that roll on the counter. I'm also guessing that you are totally up for it!

Last week I totally missed Sinclair's efforts! Sinclair is one of our true honorees because she posts about our challenges each week on not one but two and often three blogs. thanks for stopping by prissy green and telling me about this. i am starting now. I am hiding mine in another room. and with the mister out of town it will be a piece of cake. it is when he gets back that will be the challenge!

As a mother of an infant paper towel use doesn't appall me as much as the ubiquitous baby wipes that every mother seems to whip out at the hint of a speck of food on their baby's face.

We carry a dishtowel in our diaper bag and use that instead. It gets some odd looks from other moms but it works great and you can throw it in the wash.

I admit I keep paper towels around the house, but I think it takes us about six months to go through a roll, we have a full drawer of dish towels that get far more use.

Excellent challenge! I will update my side bar! sorry I didn't update last week, we were on vacation dodging sharks on the outer Cape (and not using paper towels! :) -kate

Aww man..That is gonna be a hard one. I think I could do it but my wife may be another story. We will work on it. This is a good way to get her more committed to other sustainable activities.

Yeah...count me in! I have lots of linen rags I _should_ use instead of paper towels, and some days I even remember, but not near often enough. I'm onboard for the next week at least, and I'll see if I can continue once the week's over.

(Yes, they really are linen. What? I sew a lot... :)

A reader in one of the forums I belong to has an interesting problem concerning this challenge. She makes bacon every morning for her breakfast. She says the bacon thing is non-negotiable. She uses paper towels to cook them.

Does anyone have an idea of how she might cook them without the paper towels? I don't use a microwave and haven't got a clue!

I vote for no paper towels and no microwave (I don't use one either, nor do I eat pork). But there are special microwave dishes with grooves especially for bacon that act as a drop pan...maybe that would work?

I don't use them never have! When my mom comes to town she always brings a little gift of kitchen hand towles that either match my kitchen or have a holiday theme! Mom never used paper towels either! I have tons of hand towels: 4th of July, Easter, Christmas, every occasion under the sun! LOVE them!

The Blackbus is now broadband via a new satellite system

Well after much scrimping and saving we finally got the money together to buy the satellite system.
And after 2 days reading manuals and fitting the dish to the back of the bus
i connected the laptop to the modem and began to hunt for the satellite in the sky
finally with a loud squeal from the wee box  I knew i had found it .
after a short delay while the satellite talked to the computer and updated it and with a wee ping we were up and running

so now we are almost completely self suffiecient with power etc etc so soon we can look to move onto an island..

also some more fantastic news i have started to receive an income from my blogs which will help us to survive on the island..

Low energy bulbs not as bright ?????

Are we being ripped off once again by big business ?

why do we have to have bulbs with mercury in them however small the amount?

energy saving bubs are dim in so many ways ,why is it that when i get in my car and switch on my headlights

2 little bulbs can show me the road ?

the headlight bulbs are 12v and about 4 watt strange eh?

we all must stop believing these huge companies and take control ourselves ..

not only is it complete madness to switch to a huge production off these useless bulbs it is also damaging to the earth.

My name is Andy the dafthermit .
A few people have now asked me what i hope to achieve with the festival.
I set the festival up on the 19th August 2009 ,i hope to create a place of love light and happiness
a place where we can all come together  and share our many ideas about how to make this a better world
not so much for us but our children .

I hope through my art ie pictures, films and stories that i will be able to set something up for when i have gone to the great bus in the sky
that continues to generate money for causes all over the world …
I hope that we can all leave our negative energy’s by the gate and concentrate on the real dangers that we all face living on this wonderful planet we all call home mother
