Urquhart Castle
You have probably seen the images on a thousand shortbread tins but it still doesn't detract from the splendour of Urquhart Castle. As with so many Highland castles it is mostly ruined now but with a little imagination you can picture how it must have been hundreds of years ago. From the castle grounds you are afforded some of the best views of Loch Ness and The Great Glen. You can find Urquhart Castle just south of the village of Drumnadrochit. More details can be found at the link below.Historic Scotland
Beauly Priory
Situated right in the centre of the town, Beauly Priory is within a few yards of the main shopping area. It originates from the 13th century, though in common with buildings of its type it was extensively added to over the centuries. Today, it lies in ruins but with many of its walls still upstanding. The Priory's owners, Historic Scotland, have a brief web entry at the first link below. A slighlty longer description can be found at the second link below.Historic Scotland
Gazetteer for Scotland
Glen Affric
Glen Affric gives a flavour of what much of the Highlands would have looked like hundreds of years ago with majestic mountains, sweeping Caledonian pine forests, shimmering lochs and abundant wildlife. This area of outstanding natural beauty has been recognised by the awards as a Caledonian Forest Reserve, a National Scenic Area and as a National Nature Reserve. It is possible to make a round trip by following the A833 and A831 passing the doorstep of The Beauly Gallery.Forestry Commission
Reelig Glen
Reelig Glen as well as being a beautiful mixed forest of decideous and conifer trees is also the home of Dughall Mor (Big Dougal). Dughall Mor is officially the tallest tree in the UK at 204 feet and he is surrounded by many other Douglas Firs, all 160 feet or more - an impressive sight. More details can be found by following the link below.Forestry Commission
Aigas Dam Fish Pass
Scottish Hydro Electric operate a power station using the kinetic energy of a head of water created by damming the River Beauly. Naturally, this causes a problem for fish, mostly migrating salmon, to get to and from their spawning grounds. At the Aigas Dam, there is an ingenious Fish Pass which is open to the public for viewing. Further information can be found at the link below.Scottish Hydro Electric
