A great off grid site

Another friend living off the grid

Here is another wee story of someone else escaping the grid

hi Andy hope your well and dont let the b##t#### get you down :)
Moved to newbrunswick about 6 years ago after having a bid exepted on the internet a small bungerlow in the village of chipman. my main concurn was theft of power as i had read many storys of this,so I contacted the power company to have the supply disconected, anyway on my arrival to my house I discoverd this had not been done and had recived a power bill for $650 about £400 at the time .,after lots of arguments They finaly did this only later to find out a next door nabour had been using washers dryers and electic heaters in my house. my first option was to buy a small gene 5kv petrol, this was noisey and expensive to run and had compaints from guess who yes my nabour anyway I stated to find small low cost solar panels and added to the system to get a resonable suppy also batterys both deep cycle and orbital wich I love there so kick ass, the gene died and was repaced with a 5kv enclosed diesal that is now in the basement and is used to boost the batterys and runs my well pump that needs 3hp to run, also added back up systems candels is my fave solar garden light that I charge outside and then bring in at night, the panels work geat on the roof in summer and i the snow covered winter i fix them in the windows at the back of the house and they got lots of sun also reflected off the snow drifts. more to follow ok thanks pete

What others are saying Environmental Issues Community Benefits Safety Wind Farm Site

Say NO to more wind farm development

Evidence shows wind farms don't work, so why force them on communities that have said they don't want them?

We don't want Corriemoillie, yet pressure is being applied and money changing hands. We don't want a massive cluster of turbines reaching 125 meters into the air, in an area of outstanding beauty.

Thanks to outstanding levels of support in protecting this beautiful area we were able to win a partial victory in 2007 campaigning against the development at Lochluichart, with the number of turbines being reduced from 43 to 17.

However, a new proposal to build, by E.ON, an adjacent 19 turbine wind farm at Corriemoillie forest has been lodged and the Lochluichart developers are undertaking a scoping exercise to extend their original planning permission. If built the completed development will become the third largest wind farm in Scotland and even bigger than the original Lochluichart proposals.
Fact Sheet available HERE

If you wish to object, you need to register your position again with Highland Council by 22nd November. (Any previous objections you may have submitted about the Corriemoillie wind farm are now invalid following the withdrawal of the original scheme by E.ON, and the submission of a new one. So your previous objection will not be recorded against E.ON's new application).

We are sure that you appreciate how vital it is preserve the landscape, habitat and economy of this unique and unspoilt area.

Send your objections to:
David Mudie.
Planning Department.
The Highland Council Headquarters.

Glenurquhart Road,
Inverness. IV3 5NX
Or email:

Planning application reference:

A draft letter/email is available for your use HERE you may wish to use this as the basis for your objection. If you email please bcc us at
Addresses closer to the proposed development will carry more weight with the Council and that joint letters from one household only count as one objection - so if you have more people at your address wishing to object, please ask them to send a separate letter/email.

By registering your objection to this destructive development, you will be telling the planners, along with many others, that another wind farm in the area should not be given the go-ahead.

On behalf of Stop Corriemoillie, a group of local residents and many others opposed to inappropriate development in the Garve and Achnasheen vicinity. Our campaign is run by volunteers, who care..

The Last Tiger

The thought that somewhere on the planet a human child is being born that will in their life witness the death of the final tiger haunts me daily.
As we expand our presence on the earth and the eternal drive towards ever increasing production off both food and products to make all comfortable all over the world
animals of all sizes and species are forced into ever  smaller habitat
The nay sayers ,sceptics and people who simply don’t care two shits about the planet or life outside their bubble sit on their arses and attack people that do care and that try to help in anyway they can
Even today people still laugh at the idea that humans can have an affect on the environment yet all you have to do is look at the temp inside a city compared to the surrounding countryside to see the effect of our cities which on average are 10 degress higher are having .
From all around the cities both the surrounding countryside and beyond
the daily struggle to feed the beast and at any cost
as long as the city dwellers are able to buy their wee plastic toys or some obscure fruit or food flown in at any cost. as lond as it is cheap. as long as the endless aisles are filled and clean free from any germs ,who cares.
People all over the world are struggling to help
they can see the wave of extinctions that are coming and all try in any way to help wether it is the rejection of the huge power companies a complete change in our modern lifestyles . or simply doing with less in daily life .

Andy the Daft Hermit lives 45 minutes outside Inverness with his wife Mel in an old bus parked in a layby. This current home of theirs is the longest they have ever stayed in one spot. “I’ve been travelling now 25 years,” said Andy Lowe. “Mel’s been travelling 15. One of the reasons we’ve come and stayed up here is because of Mel’s health. I wanted to bring her to the mountains for fresh air and clean water and just a slower pace of life.” Mel has had breast cancer twice, skin cancer once, and for three years believed she had bone cancer after being wrongly diagnosed. Andy’s belief in the restorative powers of the north made them pack up ‘The Black Bus’ that they live in and cross the border into Scotland. New Highland home for hermit couple Andy and Mel “I think we both believe in trying to get to a more simple way of life,” said Andy, “but it’s strange for us because we are sort of hermits, or we like to live separate, but it’s not being anti-social… it’s just the way we are that allows us to be creative.” Andy first began travelling when he left the army. Fed up with bureaucracy he packed a rucksack and left for France and has been travelling ever since. By investing any money the couple have earned into solar panels and wind generators they now live a self-sustaining existence, without electric bills, and collect rain water “straight from Heaven”. “It’s not easy,” said Mel. “There might be time when there might not be enough facilities around, but you always find a way, you know?” Rather than rejecting technology, Andy blogs about his travels online and collaborates with artists from around the world via his ‘Scratchy Heid Film Studio’, which he runs from a static trailer next to the couple’s bus. He explained his philosophy: “My belief is that if you can go through life and you drop dead and you’ve got a balance there that slightly outweighs the good than the bad, you’ve done alright. “Yesterday, with what Mel’s been through with the cancer and all that, I had a woman on one of my sites there that thanked me for the writing, for the positive things, and to me that’s worth everything. You can keep your millions, we’re not interested. That is what we do.” To check out Andy’s artwork and video projects check out his website. MORE FROM THE NORTH
