Donations ??????????????????? why ????????????

I was asked today why i have started to ask for donations for my work
on line , well it was put more hurtful than that..

It is simple like everyone else i have to find a small amount of cash
to keep my family fed and to help with the upkeep of my blog etc

Like a busker that goes down the street and plays he lays his hat doon
in the hope the people that enjoy his music will flip a coin or two
into the hat

or anyone else that goes to work, they hope to get paid , so i think .
why not me and as i don't charge for any of my work on line and
considering the hundreds of hours i have spent learning my various
crafts ..

to me to ask for the odd 20p donation seems fair and after all from
the comments i get my work makes people smile, laugh, cry ,think and
much much more not bad for 20p

anyway what do you think is it right to ask for a donations ?????

Emails to Tesco re NOT IN MY TROLLEY campaign against the use of child slavery in the Indian cotton fields to supply the shops with cheap clothes

my email to Tescos

Dear sir/madam

Over the last few years i have watched the price of your clothes fall, and have always been shocked as to how you do it, it does not take long to find out though that the clothes are using child slavery in India and as a result i have set up a facebook group to put a halt to this, as a loyal customer of many years i am sure that you can do your bit to help, i have asked my members at NOT IN MY TROLLEY if they would pay an extra 50p per item to stop this and 100% have said yes , my idea is that you have a dual label one with the price and another with the added 50p this would give the people the choice, also the money must go to the bottom of the chain to ensure the cotton pickers receive it and it is not stolen . i hope to hear from you with regards my worries , yours a worried customer

Dear Mr Lowe
Thank you for contacting us and I apologise for the delay in my response.
As a founder member of the Ethical Trading Initiative, Tesco seeks to put ethical trading at the very heart of its operations.
We realise that this is a complex issue with many causes which we acknowledge are hard to address individually. However, the use of organised and forced child labour is completely unacceptable and leads us to conclude that whilst these practices persist in some countries, it is something we do not condone.
To this end, we require our suppliers to identify the source of raw cotton used in all Tesco clothing – and we will randomly audit records to ensure our requirements are being met.
In addition we are working with world leading traceability experts, Historic Futures, to develop and implement an online track and trace system to monitor cotton country of origin and provide greater transparency through our supply chains.
I hope this information is helpful to you and thank you again for your comments.
Kind regards
Kirsty McGregor

Email to tesco on the subject of the security buzzer

Dear Sir/Madam

Let me tell you a wee story of a once loyal Tesco customer of more
years than i care to think of that is no more .

On a wonderful sunny highland spring day myself and my wife went
shopping and as always we made a bee line for our local Tesco store a
place i know only too well as my wife has shopped at your stores all
over this country
I dread to think of the thousands that has been spent at your many
stores over the years ..

Well all that has changed
(and as if one of the many storms i have watched rush into our wee
mountain home from a furious Atlantic ,that brings with it darkness
and cold )
As i said on a wonderful sunny highland spring day with the eagles
dancing in the sky ,flowers of all colours jumping for joy at the
coming season and with a feeling of happiness ,i followed my wife into
the store, a rare event indeed as i am usually consigned to a long
wait in the car park … ( which must always be followed by a cheery
"did you get everything dear " or else..)

And as long as i live i will rue the day i stepped into your store to
purchase a much needed hard drive for my laptop
Once i had chosen the said item i headed to the checkout while my wife
disappeared further into your well lit store clutching the remainder
of the money ( never to be seen again,no matter if it is £10 or £300)

At the checkout i paid for my two items and with a smile and receipt
firmly grasped in my hand headed to the door and the usual 1 to 2 hour
wait for my beautiful wife…
when my life changed ……….

As i headed out the door a loud
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
filled the store and off into the car park
I froze unsure what to do and looked outside as people all going about
their business stopped and stared ,at this person who was frozen to
the spot
A quick glance was exchanged by myself and the other 3 people trapped
by the alarm ,but as they realised it wasn't them they headed off
leaving me to face the music alone..
instantly a wave of judgemental thoughts scurried and rushed at me
from all corners of the car park ..
The realisation that the alarm was targeted at me ,the feeling of
wanting to run and hide overwhelmed me but my legs refused to obey.
Panic ensued my every thought
what if ,had i ,etc etc
A sweat of panic bathed my body soaking my whiter than white clothing
( if only i had that underarm stuff Mel buys 2 for 1 )

THIEF THIEF THIEF
was all i could think …..

Unsure what i was to do i turned as a security guy headed over and led
me to his desk and in full view of all the customers in the store
started to check my bag and goods…
From up the aisle by the veg a woman stood
and holding a cucumber in her hand shot me a look of complete disgust
the likes i have never felt no matter where i looked i was greeted by
similar looks
until i felt like some piece of scum and thief to boot ( even though i
knew i had paid)
To me as a loyal and honest customer i can't understand how you can do
that to people
I realise you have to try and stop the theft from your stores ,but if
you happen to catch an honest customer in that net the very least you
could do

is take them somewhere private and if you find out you are wrong then
i think a wee token from you would go a long way .. to heal the shame
and disgrace

Since this event i have dipped into a deep depression and find that my
creative side has gone
no longer am i able to admire the sheer beauty that surrounds me in my
home in the mountains

i just pray that the day comes soon when i am happy and free again..
As until that visit to your store i had been an up and coming an
filmmaker and story teller
I find now that i am unable to sleep the constant dark cloud of shame
follows me everywhere even to my once warm and cosy bed ….
My dreams now are no longer filled with the wonder of life ,thoughts
of my next film or poem, story or whatever
but instead are filled with an enveloping darkness and a bright neon
banner that every night seems to get brighter
that streams across my closed eyes

TESCOS TESCOS TESCOS TESCOS
and always the sound
BEEP BEEP BEEP
so now i find at the age off 49 i am considering a rare visit to the
doctors for help…

yours

a once loyal customer

The Dafthermit

Thanks for popping bye
Andy

Child workers in the cotton fields of India
Jan 25, 2012 04:56 PM
There are an estimated 215 million child workers worldwide and nearly two-thirds of those (aged 5-17 years) work in agriculture, according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The majority of these are unpaid family members. However, around a third of child labourers in agriculture are employed by private individuals in sectors which traditionally rely on cheap labour, such as the cotton industry. In India, cotton growers make use of vulnerable groups such as migrants or indigenous communities to pick and gin the cotton. Workers are often women and girls, who spend long hours to produce the cotton needed by the global clothes market.
For a recent report on child cotton labourers in India, the BBC's Humphrey Hawksley travelled to a northern area of Gujarat. Here he found girls, some as young as 10 or 11, working in a factory processing raw cotton from the region's fields. There was no minimum wage and little attention paid to safety. One labour activist who acted as a guide on the trip said "the workers' lives are terrible".
It was also easy to find young children openly working in the cotton fields. One girl said she was 10 years old, though she wasn't certain about her age. She had been brought to work in the cotton fields from Rajastan and wasn't sure where her parents were. An adult explained that the child had been supplied through a labour agent by her parents, who would receive all the money she earned.
According to one Indian campaigning organisation, around a third of workers in the cotton-producing industry are children. The number of child cotton workers across the country as a whole could be as much as half a million. In the cotton ginning factories, the children are exposed to dust which can cause lung disease from a young age, though legally, all workers should wear masks. In the fields, the children have long hours of stooping and repetitive movement, often in extreme temperatures. Youngsters are also exposed to skin irritants contained in the crops. Research now shows that a child's neurological development can be affected from exposure to pesticides, which can damage the nervous system.
The ILO has already drawn attention to the frequent use of child labour in the cotton industry. In 2009, its Global report highlighted the situation of children in Uzbekistan, who are taken out of school to collect the cotton harvests. After media attention, several major clothes retailers and buyers stopped sourcing cotton from Uzbekistan. However, as the BBC's report on the situation inIndia makes clear, retailers have to make an effort to work back through the supply chain to find out where the raw materials are coming from. Clothing manufacturers in India now use modern factories with good facilities and working practices and they track their supply chain back to the spinning mills. But few are going even further back to examine the ginning factories and cotton fields. And that's where the use of child labour continues to exist.

Veg Box Scheme

Veg boxes are produced in the season.  A typical £15 box will feed a family of four and contain a variety of produce available in season.
Beetroot, salad leaves, spinach, tatties, courgette, peas, parsnip, cauliflour, carrot, broad beans, cucumber, sweetcorn, rhubarb, gooseberries, raspberries, swiss chard.
None of the veg is bought in, it all comes from the farm.
In 2007 we have suppied a local NHS funded Veg Box on Prescription Scheme which subsidises boxes to families with health problems.
Currently our main garden is run by Simon Calder of the Lochbroom and Ullapool Growers Group (a community initiative) and much of their produce is for sale at the weekly Ullapool Market which is outside the Seaforth Pub on a Saturday in the more clement weather.  He can also leave veg boxes for collection on arrival at Leckmelm please call 01854 613265 for more details from Simon.

  • Lochside Cottages

There are three Lochside Cottages which are situated on the edge of Lochbroom adjacent to Leckmelm Farm. The cottages were completely rebuilt in 2004 to provide the ultimate comfort from which you can enjoy armchair nature watching over the elemental waters of Loch Broom. Otters, porpoises, seals, dolphins, sheep and pigs are regularly spotted by visitors. The three cottages are terraced with private, secluded entrances, an access ramp for those with limited mobility and are on a single storey. Each cottage has excellent views over the Loch, No 3 looks towards the Fannichs, No 2 across the Loch to Loggie and No 1 westwards to Ullapool and the Summer Isles beyond.
Beds: There are two bedrooms in each cottage, one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. In Lochside Number 2, there is a further twin bedded room.
Bathrooms: Nos 1 and 3 have a fully tiled bathroom with power shower over bath and WC. No 2 has a bathroom and an en suite shower room and WC in the double room.  All bathrooms have heated towel rails.
Living Rooms: The open plan kitchen/diner and living room has a twin aspect view and takes in the best of the views and the sun. Kitchens are fully equipped with a compact dishwasher in nos 1 and 3 and family size dishwasher in No 2.  The TVs all have Sky TV and have a scart attachment should you wish to bring your own DVD player or games console.
The cottages have solid chestnut wooden flooring throughout and have zone controlled underfloor heating which means that even in the deep mid winter snow you will feel warmth beneath your feet. Of course there is an open fire to provide a focal point to the sitting room and extra warmth if required.
The cottages are equipped to a three star standard throughout  including a washer/dryer, sofas, armchairs, TV and books to read. There is a dining table with chairs in each cottage as well as outdoor garden furniture for eating in the summer months.
Outdoors: Adjacent to the cottages is the old walled garden of Leckmelm House an area for children to play on the toy tractors or in the tipi. The sea shore walks from the door of your cottage are enjoyed by dogs and humans alike and can take you directly to Leckmelm Gardens. Especially suitable for children who like to beachcomb and visit the farm yard animals. If you have your own boat or canoe it is possible to launch it from the Seventeenth Century pier at Leckmelm Bay.
If you are looking for somewhere to get away from it all and a place to enjoy the elemental landscape of the hills winter or summer these are the cottages for you. The only sounds you will hear are those of the waves lapping at the shore.

……..I would like to point out that ALL animals in this film were severely traumatised and are now under the local vet…… ( donations to help with their treatment can be sent to help the hermit . com )

I would also like to point out that all persons that have appeared in this film have expressed dismay at being included in such a shite wee film as this…

I would like to thanks Sally and Jezz for allowing me the use of the track “ Into the wild “ from the CD Purusha more of their music can be found at www.sallyhope.co.uk

Many thanks also to the guys at HCC ( Highland car crushers ) http://www.highlandcarcrushers-inverness.co.uk/

and Mel my wife ( who still can’t find her leggings )

Also to the guys at the TAT shop in Ullapool for supplying the HERMIT costumes at a reasonable rate ..

http://www.blythswood.org/index.php?do=locator&id=51

Thanks to Graham and Alan for all the laughs etc , lovely to have met you both .

I would also like to point out that the Highland Council DID NOT evict us for missing a single payment ..

They Evicted us on the grounds that we were an eyesore and were a minging wee pair of hermits .. ( bloody cheek )

This film is dedicated to DYLAN oor wee dug that died no long ago

Looked in the mirror this morning and saw a young handsome guy with a heed of hair . THEN I PUT MY SPECS ON..

and devide it by the total pop of the Uk . Seems fair and simple to me

I am working on a couple off ideas for a film for the group i have set
up to protest against child slavery in India and our cheap clothes
sold at the supermarkets.
.
One is to get as many people to stand in line at the checkout with
only clothes . Then one by one the clothes are paid for , but left on
the counter and they pile up higher as each person does the same and
walks off till all have passed through the till. Then all return to
the clothes and toss 50p onto the belt. Then a small child climbs oot
from under the clothes covered in blood and sweat BUT SMILING .
peaceful protest. And by buying the clothes we dont break the chain.
Which would only result in those at the bottom suffering more . What
do you think ? .. Love and light

A wee film about us on STVs the HOUR SHOW click on STV logo to see the film
Andy the Daft Hermit lives 45 minutes outside Inverness with his wife Mel in an old bus parked in a layby. This current home of theirs is the longest they have ever stayed in one spot. “I’ve been travelling now 25 years,” said Andy Lowe. “Mel’s been travelling 15. One of the reasons we’ve come and stayed up here is because of Mel’s health. I wanted to bring her to the mountains for fresh air and clean water and just a slower pace of life.” Mel has had breast cancer twice, skin cancer once, and for three years believed she had bone cancer after being wrongly diagnosed. Andy’s belief in the restorative powers of the north made them pack up ‘The Black Bus’ that they live in and cross the border into Scotland. New Highland home for hermit couple Andy and Mel “I think we both believe in trying to get to a more simple way of life,” said Andy, “but it’s strange for us because we are sort of hermits, or we like to live separate, but it’s not being anti-social… it’s just the way we are that allows us to be creative.” Andy first began travelling when he left the army. Fed up with bureaucracy he packed a rucksack and left for France and has been travelling ever since. By investing any money the couple have earned into solar panels and wind generators they now live a self-sustaining existence, without electric bills, and collect rain water “straight from Heaven”. “It’s not easy,” said Mel. “There might be time when there might not be enough facilities around, but you always find a way, you know?” Rather than rejecting technology, Andy blogs about his travels online and collaborates with artists from around the world via his ‘Scratchy Heid Film Studio’, which he runs from a static trailer next to the couple’s bus. He explained his philosophy: “My belief is that if you can go through life and you drop dead and you’ve got a balance there that slightly outweighs the good than the bad, you’ve done alright. “Yesterday, with what Mel’s been through with the cancer and all that, I had a woman on one of my sites there that thanked me for the writing, for the positive things, and to me that’s worth everything. You can keep your millions, we’re not interested. That is what we do.” To check out Andy’s artwork and video projects check out his website. MORE FROM THE NORTH
